Disney Fine-Tunes Disability Access Service: Ensuring a Magical Experience for All
Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort have recently implemented changes to their Disability Access Service (DAS) program. This update aims to serve guests with disabilities better and ensure a more inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone visiting the magical theme parks.
Addressing Increased Demand and Misuse
The DAS program was initially introduced in 2013 as a replacement for a previous system that faced issues with misuse. It is designed to assist guests with difficulty waiting in traditional queues due to a disability. However, Disney has acknowledged a significant rise in DAS usage in recent years, with some reports suggesting a tripling of participants. Concerns emerged that the program was only sometimes being used as intended. This prompted Disney to re-evaluate the system to ensure it caters to those needing it most.
Focus on Developmental Disabilities
The revised DAS program emphasizes its purpose of aiding guests with developmental disabilities, such as autism, who experience challenges waiting in long lines. These challenges can stem from sensory overload, anxiety, or difficulty with repetitive behaviors. Disney clarifies that DAS is not intended for guests with mobility limitations but can still manage traditional queues using wheelchairs or other assistive devices.
New Procedures for Establishing Eligibility
The updated system places a greater emphasis on determining eligibility for DAS. Guests can now have a virtual video chat with the Accessibility Services team, ideally 30 to 2 days before their visit. This allows for a personalized assessment of their needs and determining whether DAS would be beneficial. Previously, DAS could be obtained upon arrival at the park, potentially leading to situations where some guests who didn’t necessarily require the service might have utilized it.
Streamlined Return Times
Disney aims to maintain a streamlined process for DAS return times. Once eligibility is established, guests can use a mobile app or visit designated locations within the park to schedule return times for rides and attractions. The wait time provided will be comparable to the current standby wait for the chosen experience. This system eliminates the need for guests to physically wait in line, allowing them to enjoy other park offerings during their designated return window.
Limited Guests per DAS Registration
Another critical update involves limiting the number of guests per DAS registration. Previously, there wasn’t a cap on how many individuals within a single party could utilize a DAS pass. The new policy restricts the number to four guests per registration. This change aims to ensure that DAS is primarily used by park visitors with disabilities and their essential companions who directly provide support.
Positive Impact for All
Disney insists that all visitors will eventually gain from the updated DAS program. Wait times for all users can be minimized by making sure the service is used by those who need it the most. Improving the accessibility of parks for visitors with disabilities benefits all park visitors.
How to Register for DAS at Walt Disney World
- Registration is available via live video chat.
- Speak with a Cast Member via live video chat to determine eligibility as soon as 30 days before a park visit.
- At this time, live chat is offered in English only.
- Guests visiting now through May 19 may visit a theme park Guest Relation location to speak with a Cast Member. In-person registration will no longer be available at theme park Guest Relations locations starting May 20, 2024.
- If DAS is provided after a conversation with a Cast Member to determine eligibility, the Guest with a disability (or a parent/guardian) will participate in the registration process. This requires a photo of the DAS-registered guest to be taken.
- DAS registration maximum party size is the registered DAS Guest and up to 3 additional party members, for four people.
- DAS is valid for up to 120 days. Once the service has elapsed, Guests will need to re-register.
- For guests visiting now through May 19, 2024, DAS is valid for up to 30 days.
Addressing Concerns and Looking Ahead
The changes haven’t been without some criticism. Some advocacy groups have expressed concerns that the limitations on the number of guests per registration and the pre-visit assessment process might create hurdles for families. Disney has reassured visitors that the virtual consultations are designed to be efficient and accessible. Disney will likely monitor the effectiveness of the revised program and make further adjustments as needed. The goal remains to provide an exceptional guest experience, ensuring everyone can create lasting memories at the happiest place on earth.
